SAFARI Montage Version(s)

2.x

Symptoms

Videos will not play on your Mac, where the Mac client machine uses roaming profiles on Mac OS X Server.

Cause

Operating SAFARI Montage from the Mac operating systems requires that a small helper application is installed on first-time use. If this helper application fails to install for whatever reason, videos will not play. There are also some configuration items related to running SAFARI Montage in this type of environment.

Solution

If you have successfully installed the helper application, but SAFARI Montage is still not playing videos, your Mac OS X Server may need some additional configuration to allow for the helper application to run correctly.

Configuration information for Mac OS X Server - Workgroup Manager. Knowledge of configuring Mac OS X Server is a pre-requisite and not covered by this document. The following steps cover the basics to allow for the helper application to function correctly based on a common configuration of Mac OS X Server 10.4, with similar steps required for other versions of Mac OS X Server. If you have a complex Client/Server setup these steps may vary.

If you are allowing users to run all applications on the client machine

  1. Login to Workgroup Manager as the Directory Admin
  2. Select the Preferences tab
  3. Select either the user pane or group pane depending on your configuration
  4. Select the desired users or groups to configure
  5. Select the Applications preference item
  6. Check the “User can also open all applications on local volumes”
  7. Check the “Allow UNIX tools to run”
  8. Apply changes
  9. Reboot and login to the client machine
  10. Launch your browser and login to SAFARI Montage.

If you are allowing users to a limited set of applications on the client machine:

  7. Check the “Allow UNIX tools to run”
  8. Apply changes
  9. Reboot and login to the client machine
  10. Launch your browser and login to SAFARI Montage.
