In my 5th grade reading class, we read two wonderful books: Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles and White Socks Only by Evelyn Coleman. After reading both of these books, we compared character's and theme's across texts. We noticed how segregation played an important part in both books, which then led us to read The Story of Ruby Bridges. From there, we catapulted off on this wonderful journey through segregation and analyzing a common theme of accepting others' differences. This playlist helped the students further understand diversity, segregation, and then "meet" Rosa Parks.
