Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

When we found out that the Vietnam Traveling wall was coming to our hometown, we knew we needed to find a way to explain to the students what the Vietnam War was and why the Traveling Wall was so important.  To do this, I decided to make a powerpoint using Safari Montage clips.  The first slide is a Montage clip explaining what the Vietnam War was.  The next slide talks about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and also includes a reading of the book "The Wall" by Eve Bunting.  The folllowing slide includes a video about the architect of the wall and why she chose to build it the way she did.  On the last slide I embedded the song "Taps" and through powerpoint magic, the words to the song appear as it is being played. 

 I knew I did not want to end the lesson with just the powerpoint.  So in the playlist, I added a map of Vietnam so teachers could show the students where the war took place.  I also created a Smart Notebook lesson.  In this lesson, I created an interactive timeline that shows the important dates and events of the Vietnam War.  In the notebook lesson I also added a link to the Safari montage playlist, so the teachers could link back to the videos shown in the powerpoint to help review the facts of the timeline.  I also added a teachers guide and a 5 question quiz to the playlist if the teachers would like to extend the unit. There are also 2 internet websites that I added to the playlist under other resources for the teachers to use.

After the students come back from seeing the wall on Friday, I will use our campus Flip video camera to video the students thoughts and what they have learned about the Vietnam War and the Vietnam Traveling Wall to conclude our lesson.
