Activity 7: Plantformers

Activity 7: Plantformers

Students will explore the different ways plants have adapted to the weather, climate, seasons and soil conditions of their habitats. Through a range of hands-on activities, students will learn about the needs of plants and find examples of how plants have adapted to extreme conditions in their specific biomes. Using what they have learned, they will design and market an invention that mimics the adaptations of one or more plants to improve human survival in extreme environments.

Activity 5: Cries from Endangered Species

Activity 5: Cries from Endangered Species
Through the activities in this project, students will become aware of the issues facing specific endangered species and their habitat and use poetry to express their observations, opinions, and emotions about this important topic. The final project will be the creation of a poem that will be written, published and presented in a multimedia format to help raise awareness about different endangered species.

Activity 2: What Can I Do?

Activity 2: What Can I Do?
Through a series of guided activities, students will delve into the current conflict about the protection of endangered species and their habitats to come to an informed decision. Through the components of this activity, students will identify an issue or problem that needs to be addressed related to endangered species, collect information to support their position, draft a proposal and then recommend and action strategy for implementing their proposal.

Activity 1: Advertise the Environment

Activity 1: Advertise the Environment
Students will develop an ad campaign designed to raise awareness about important environmental issues relating to the world’s biomes. Each ad campaign will include a combination of print and multi-media material that identifies specific strategies individuals can do to help protect and preserve the biomes of the world based on research conducted to learn about their chosen biome and the environmental issues it faces.

Teaching the iGeneration: Flipping Your Classroom with SAFARI Montage

We hear a lot today about “flipping” classrooms, where the “lecture” happens at home with online media and class time is spent solidifying learning through small group activities, problem-based projects, or discussion. Teachers are creating their own mini-video guided lectures that incorporate other multi-media materials and hosting these learning objects on class websites, YouTube channels, or other district-sanctioned and protected social networks. In other words the homework, typically done at home after class instruction and classwork are flipped.
